DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran submissive as the Union Textiles Minister on Thursday, a day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) named him as an accuse in its status report on the 2G spectrum allocation scam probe submitted in the Supreme Court.

Maran visited Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his residence and handed over his acceptance in the afternoon, minutes after he attended a Cabinet meeting at 7 Race Course Road.

Earlier in the day, DMK chief M. Karunanidhi convened a meeting at his residence where the party accepted Maran’s removal. Karunanidhi told party leader T.R. Baalu to brief the prime minister about his willingness to drop Maran from the Union Cabinet.

Sources said that Karunanidhi convey to the prime minister that Maran and Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palanimanickam could be dropped from the Union government. According to source, the DMK also suggested Baalu as the substitute for Maran in the Cabinet.

Demand for Maran’s ouster had gained impetus after the CBI’s latest status report in apex court. In its report, the CBI accused the former telecom minister of forcing the promoter of Chennai-based telecom company Aircel to sell his firm to a Malaysian company in 2006. It stated that Maran intentionally sat on the Aircel’s file after it applied for 2G licence.

Earlier, Maran’s party colleague A. Raja had been dropped as telecommunication minister over 2G taint. Raja was as a result moving by the CBI for his alleged role in the scam and has been jailed since then. Party MP and Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi has also been in jail for alleged part in the scam.
