Norwegian telecom major, Telenor is in higher talks to rope in Anil Agarwal to set up a new telecom joint venture in India after sever ties with its erstwhile partner, Unitech, three independent sources familiar with the growth said.

Anil Agarwal is expected to enter the telecom business enterprise in personal capacity and not through any of his listed company in Vedanta Group.

The joint venture could be finalized soon as Telenor wants to bring in a new partner for participating in the 2G auctions due in the next few months. Uninor, Telenor’s India unit, had lost all 22 licenses following a Supreme Court verdict on the 2G scam case.

In an e-mail statement Telenor said, “For the new company we have had good discussions with a handful of Indian companies, but I am not able to remark on rumors or speculation. I can assure you that when a new partner is in place, it will be properly announced.”

Telenor had accused Unitech of fraud and parody and was scouting for a new partner. In an e-mail statement, Telenor said, the partnership with Unitech has no future, and that it’s our goal to set up a new company that will be our stage for which we may enter the auction.”

However, Anil Agarwal told ET Now that he is not in meeting with Telenor for a telecom JV in India.
